Shrimp’s Versatility Makes it a Smart Menu Choice

Americans consume over a billion pounds of shrimp annually.

Shrimp has been the number one fresh and frozen seafood choice in America since 2001, and the per capita, average consumption has topped 4 lbs for the last several years. Shrimp may be small but they are anything but small in consumer appeal. Readily available, inexpensive, versatile and low fat, and appealing to health conscious consumers — menu-friendly shrimp tastes good and is good for you. Few other menu items offer the versatility and customer appeal of shrimp. Shrimp can be paired with a vast array of house sauces and condiments to add variety and flair, and to keep pace with emerging food trends.

Even though it’s no longer an exotic dish to the consumer, shrimp is still widely reserved for the restaurant table rather than the kitchen table. Take advantage of this popularity and incorporate shrimp into as many of your menu items as possible.

Complement chicken or beef entrees by adding grilled, seared, broiled, or sautéed shrimp to increase your average check size. Some easy ways to add shrimp and value to a menu are:

  • Skewered and grilled with summer vegetables
  • As a topping on salads instead of croutons
  • Cooked and served with a variety of dipping sauces
  • Added to an existing pasta or rice dish
  • Butterflied and added as a side to steak or chicken
  • Baby shrimp in an avocado with shrimp sauce
  • Shrimp and vegetable tempura platter

Arista Industries and Sysco have partnered to offer a broad range of Portico® band frozen shrimp. Varieties include whites or black tigers, farm raised or wild caught, ready to eat or ready to cook.
